A third of UK divorces cited Facebook as one of the primary causes this year, up from just 20 per cent in 2009.
According to a study apparently conducted by the divorce guidance website Divorce-Online, which examined the records of 5,000 divorces, there were three main behaviours centred around the social network:
1. Inappropriate messages to the opposite sex.
2. Facebook friends reporting a spouses behaviour.
3. Separated couples making nasty comments about each other.
This sort of behaviour also seems to be limited to Facebook, as Twitter was only mentioned in 0.4 per cent of divorce cases.
"Social networking has become the primary tool for communication and is taking over from text and e-mail in my opinion. If someone wants to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex then the easiest place to do it,” said a Divorce-Online spokesman.
“People need to be careful what they write on their walls as the courts are seeing these posts being used in financial disputes and children cases as evidence.”
