Commits to unlocking all phones made in 2011 while new tool unlocks all handsets launched since September.

HTC gives smartphone owners unlocking gift

Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC has released a new bootloader unlock utility which adds support for all of the firm’s recent smartphones.

"We have heard your voice and starting now, we will allow our bootloader to be unlocked for 2011 models going forward," HTC said while announcing that all devices launched after September are supported by the tool.

Android smartphone models include the Amaze 4G, Evo 3G, Sensation and the Flyer tablet. Once the bootloader process is complete then owners of those smartphones can upload custom firmware such as the popular albiet often unstable CyanogenMod.

Interested in unlocking late model Android phones is running at a high given the availability of unofficial Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ‘ROM’s.

Of course enthusiasts have rarely needed to wait until a phone manufacturer produces an official tool. Last month HTC Super Tool v2 was released which promises to unlock bootloaders, root the phone, unlock SIMs and disable/enable HTC Sense. The tool is said to work for ‘most’ HTC devices.
