Apple leapfrogs retail giants into second place in 'hot shops' list.

Apple and Amazon battle for Christmas

Apple has jumped six places to become the UK’s number two online shopping web site second only to Amazon according to a new Experian ‘Hot Shops’ report.

The release of the iPhone 4S appears to have catapulted Apple’s own brand web store ahead in popularity to leapfrog Argos, Tesco, Next, Your M&S and in the November Hot Shops list.

"Online shopping is stronger than ever and year-on-year we’ve seen UK Internet visits to the online retail category grow by three per cent, a trend we fully expect to continue throughout Christmas and the January sales period," said Experian analyst James Murray.

Experian predicted that the 2011 season will be another record breaker for the online retail sector. The site suggested that the iPad will go head to head with Amazon’s Kindle.

The company estimated that £3.72bn will be spent online during the peak activity weeks beginning the 28th November and 5th December and that fashion retailers in particular would be the "big performers this Christmas."
