Two-thirds to be switched on by 2014

BT say superfast broadband roll out is ahead of schedule

British telco BT said that the firm is on track to complete the rollout of fibre-based superfast broadband to over two thirds of UK homes and businesses up to one year earlier than expected.

"Our roll-out of fibre broadband is one of the fastest in the world and so it is great to be ahead of what was an already challenging schedule," said BT boss Ian Livingston.

The company will hire 520 additional engineers to help the construction and will also bring forward investment from the planned £2.5 billion the company has already earmarked for the new broadband network.

BT is aiming to complete two thirds of the network by running fibre to the street cabinet by 2014 while a lucky third will have fibre to the home with speeds of up to 100Mb/second.
