Samsung and Google to unveil Nexus Prime

Google and Samsung may announce a new Next-branded Android smartphone following the announcement of an event in San Diego, California on the 11th of October.

Announcing "What’s new from Android", the next major version of the Android operating system code-named Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to debut. Traditionally Google has launched a Nexus-branded phone manufactured by a partner in order to launch the new OS.

The new mobile operating system is set to reconverge the smartphone and tablet pathways between Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 3.0 Honeycomb. A video appeared on YouTube purporting to be a Samsung Nexus S smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich, as expected showing a UI sharing many similarities with Honeycomb.

Widely circulating rumours of the Nexus Prime’s hardware specification appeared earlier this month, suggested that it will be based on a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. That just so happens to happens to match the very recently unveiled new Samsung Exynos 4212 processor.

Other than the clock speed bump from the Samsung Galaxy S2’s Exynos 4210, the new 32nm processor is said to be up to 50 per cent faster at 3D graphics. That’s some achievement given the ARM Mali GPU equipped Exynos 4210 is still the fastest mobile chip on the market.

The Nexus Prime will also benefit from another top-shelf component from Samsung’s enviable parts bin, a Super AMOLED display. Samsung recently announced two new smartphones for the Korean market which provide a possible clue regarding the Nexus Prime’s display.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE is fronted with a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 800 x 480 while a even larger device, the Galaxy S2 HD LTE, will come with a monster 4.65-inch 1280 x 720p display – even of those screens would seem likely.
