Amazon’s Android Appstore has begun rolling out world wide after the service first launched in the US in March.
Amazon have yet to official announce the move but a number of Amazon customers have reported that the firm’s Android shop is taking orders in Europe and in Australia.
The Amazon Appstore differs from Google’s official Android Marketplace in that the etail giant needs to approve software before it appears for purchase, potentially reducing the risk of malware which has struck the free-for-all Marketplace on more than one occasion.
The Amazon Appstore also routinely offers free downloads of ordinarily non-free software for users of the service. Developers signing up must agree to Amazon being able to offer their application free of charge in these ‘promotions’, a practice some have labeled exploitative.
The worldwide roll out of the store precedes the widely expected launch of an a low cost Amazon branded Android tablet.
