Angry Birds in the new social kid on the block

Google adds games to Google+

Google has added games to the internet giant’s new social networking service Google+ in a move that takes at incumbent social giant Facebook.

"Playing games is a great way for us to spend quality time with each other (and a little healthy competition never hurt anyone either)," said Google engineering veep Vic Gundotra.

It’s unclear if the healthy competition he referred to was between gamers or between Google and Facebook.

Google took pains to paint the new games feature as an optional experience with Gundotra saying the lighter side of G+ would be "there when you want them and gone when you don’t".

The batch of initial games includes: Angry Birds, Bejeweled Blitz, Bubble Island, City of Wonder, Sudoku, Dragon Age Legends, Zombie Lane and many more.

Rather than appearing all at once, Google is rolling out the games to Google+ accounts gradually.

"When you see a Games page in your account, please give games a try and send us feedback. Look for the "send feedback" button in the bottom right-hand corner of any page in Google+. Thanks for playing!"

Gundotra said that like the rest of the Google+ project the company was "just getting started."
