Aims to extend the life of desktop and notebook PCs

SanDisk moves into retail SSD market

Flash memory specialist Sandisk announced a new SSD offering for the retail market called the SanDisk Ultra SSD.

The firm claims the new SSD can "extend the life of desktop and notebook PCs, and offers greater performance, durability and power efficiency than a hard disk drive."

The SanDisk Ultra SSD is available in 60, 120 and 240GB capacities with US MSRP pricing announced of $130, $220 and $450 respectively. The SATA II drives are said to be capable of 280MB/s sequential read and 270MB/s sequential write.

"Replacing a computer’s hard disk drive with the SanDisk Ultra SSD is more cost effective than buying a new PC," said Sandisk marketing boss Kent Perry.

"Our new SSD delivers greater speed and reliability than a hard disk drive at an affordable price."
