Reclaims the performance crown from Nvidia's GTX 580M

AMD launches ‘world’s fastest’ HD 6990M mobile graphics

Chipmaker AMD announced the launch of the Radeon HD 6990M mobile graphics processor which, the firm claimed, is the world’s fastest single-GPU mobile graphics solution.

Just a matter of weeks ago, arch-rival Nvidia described the newly launched GeForce GTX 580M as the "world’s fastest", but AMD claims to have retaken the performance crown with a processor the firm says is 25 per cent faster than any other notebook graphics chip.

AMD GPU boss Matt Skynner called the Radeon HD 6990M "epic", adding that the processors support for DirectX 11 and stereoscopic 3D meant the processor "demolishes" the myth of performance compromised mobile graphics.

What’s more, the Radeon HD 6990M will be available in multi-GPU configurations via the firm’s CrossFireX technology. AMD also said the new graphics processor delivers acceleration to applications other than games such as improving video playback, streaming and faster web browsing with IE9 and Mozilla Firefox.

Dell’s boutique gaming brand Alienware immediately announced that AMD’s top-of-the-range mobile graphics would arrive in the firm’s similarly top-of-the-range M18x laptop.
