The iPad is selling more to Android smartphone users than Android-based tablets, according to an analyst who also said that the ipad would continue to dominator into 2012.
Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said that the iPad was more popular among owners of existing Android smartphones than Android-based tablets although he provided no numbers to back up the claim.
Walkley went on to suggest that those buying tablets were likely to "remain in that ecosystem" based on the higher prices of tablet-optimised applications. "Therefore, we anticipate Apple should maintain dominant share of the tablet market in C2011 and C2012," Walkley said in a note to clients.
He went on to state that rival tablets such as the Motorola Xoom and the RIM Playbook "have not sold well at current price points," drawing the obvious conclusion that they would sell better if they were cheaper than Apple’s successful iPad.
The analyst provided a market share estimate for the tablet market, claiming that Apple would see 56 per cent of the total market with the next highest Samsung on 12 per cent. The data also puts Amazon, widely expected to launch Android tablets, at just 5 per cent.
The firm estimated that Apple’s market share would slip 5 per cent to 51 per cent in 2012, with Nokia grabbing three per cent of the market from zero today, and Amazon claiming to 6 per cent.
The analyst provided no basis for the predictions.
