Component suppliers suggest grand entry in Q3

Amazon tablet to dominate Android-powered rivals

Amazon’s upcoming Android tablet is set to dominate all other non-Apple brands if figures from the component supply channel are to be believed.

The DigiTimes compiled a table of supply volume of tables in the third quarter of this year based on information from industry sources within the component supply chain. Apple looks set to continue to dominate the category, with volume between 14 and 15 million units, while a fresh entry from Amazon will sell far more than rival Android tablet makers.

Component manufacturers targeting tablets are set to gear up production with some hefty growth forecast. Amazon’s new Android tablet is expected to sell between one to 1.2 million tablets in Q3, far more than any other brand, with the DigiTimes estimating that Acer, Asus, Samsung, HP and RIM would each ship 750 to 900 thousand.

Amazon’s entry into Android tablets may well do even better with DigiTimes sources pointing to demand for two million touch panels by the August to September time frame.

Android tablet vendors such as Acer, Asus and Samsung are shipping solid quantities of tablets but the numbers pale in comparison with the all-conquering iPad. Could Amazon have the brand and a popular, likely price competitive offering, which will finally give Apple a run for their money?
