Following the launch of Google’s social networking platform, the internet giant unveiled a makeover for the firm’s popular Gmail web mail client.
Google user experience designer Jason Cornwell said that the continual addition of features to Gmail resulted in the interface becoming ever more "cluttered and complex," he wrote on the Google blog.
"That’s one of the reasons we’re embarking on a series of interface updates to help strip out unnecessary clutter and make Gmail as beautiful as it is powerful," Cornwell explained.
Rather than launching a new Gmail, Google will be rolling out upgrades over the next few months which allow users to provide feedback along the way. The process begins with a pair of new themes which appear in the Themes tab of Gmail’s settings.
Called Preview and Preview (Dense), the new interfaces are designed to "expand dynamically to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences," said Cornwell.
Google is also asking users to provide feedback on the new design.
Elsewhere in the Google product portfolio, Google Calendar is also due a redesign but the change will roll out automatically rather than users need to change any setting.
