In order to force readers to buy the app

Paper blocks iPad access to web site

The New York Post blocked access to the paper’s web site via the iPad’s Safari web browser, urging readers to download the firm’s subscription-based iPad application.

Part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp empire, the NYP move appears to be part of a strategy to renew readership inline with the group’s dedicated iOS app, the iPad-exclusive ‘The Daily’ publication.

Since the interception is an entirely artificial affair based on the browser’s identification to the web server, the NYP site remained accessible for users of alternative browsers such as Skyfire and Opera Mini.

Paid content’s Staci D. Kramer called the move "one of the most poorly conceived paywall efforts I’ve come across."

"And I’ve seen more than a few," Kramer added.
