AMD announced the winners of the firm’s first US-based ‘Visionary of the Year Awards’ which aims to recognise the use of technology to innovate in entrepreneurship, photography and, er, food.
The chipmaker said the theme of the awards is "Vision makes you more you", which doesn’t seem to be a very clear theme other than attempting to persuade the press to capitalise the firm’s new Vision brand.
At any rate Father Greg Boyle, winner of the entrepreneurship category, appears to be a deserving cause of recognition.
"Through Homeboy Industries, [Father Boyle is] helping ex-gang members reinvent their futures for the better, leaving behind dangerous and destructive lifestyles involving gangs and drugs," AMD said.
As a winner, Father Boyle was awarded a $20,000 grant and $2,500 worth of AMD-based computer equipment.
Photographer Todd Baxter took out the photography award, with AMD giving the nod to Baxter’s ‘Owl Scouts’ series which ‘illustrates the challenges of life through the misadventures of two young children’, AMD said.
Gail Ambrosius from Madison, Wisconsin, took out fairly random ‘Visionary Foodies’ category. Ambrosius is a chocolatier responsible for specialty chocolates like ‘Caramel with Sea Salt’ and ‘Tea-inspired Truffles.’
The company could not be reached for comment on freshly circulating rumours that AMD’s new A-Series of Fusion APUs actually taste like chocolate.
