Even as social networking giant Facebook approaches 700 million users worldwide, users in the US and Europe have been declining according to an Inside Facebook report.
Prompting fears that Facebook has ‘peaked’, Inside Facebook revealed that North American users of the social networking site had fallen by nearly six million throughout the month of May.
The United Kingdom, Norway and Russia also experienced a loss of Facebook of ‘more than 100,000’ each. The Facebook analysis site said that the results were in line with a finding that as Facebook users approached 50 per cent of a country’s population, growth came to a halt.
However the developing nations continue to experience to drive Facebook users up worldwide. "Facebook has been able to make up stalls and losses with big gains in heavily-populated developing countries like Mexico, Brazil, India and Indonesia," Facebook Insider said.
Facebook appeared to get a little cross at Facebook Insider’s claims of a reduction in US users, specifically the use of Facebook’s own advertising tool as a data source.
"From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions," Facebook told Facebook Insider before complaining that the firm’s ad tool was not ‘designed to be a source’ of growth data.
"We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook. More than 50 per cent of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day."
