Intel plant blast injures seven

An explosion at an Intel chip fabrication plant in Arizona resulted in seven staff injured, four of which were hospitalised.

A Reuters report quoted responding emergency services as saying that the blast originated in a chemical storage room. Four have reportedly been taken to hospitals suffering from injuries including concussions and shrapnel wounds.

The plant, which is in the process of being upgraded to 22nm fabrication technology for next-generation processors, was immediately evacuated and the facility remains closed until the conclusion of investigation into the cause of the blast.

"We are trying to ascertain what happened. All we know is that there was no damage or release of chemicals to the community," Intel’s fab boss Joss Walden told the Phoenix Business Journal.
