New satellite ushers in 10Mbps rural broadband service

Eutelsat has unveiled a new European satellite broadband package called Tooway, offering speeds up to 10Mbps from the new KA-SAT satellite.

Aimed at users unable to gain traditional broadband service such as those in rural areas, users will need a 77cm satellite dish and a special modem, both of which will cost £199 up front or can be rented for £9.99 per month.

The cheapest monthly subscription comes to £49.99 for a 2Mbps upload service which includes a monthly download limit of 13GB. A 4Mbps upload speed package bundles 25GB for £99.99 a month.

"The entry into service of KA-SAT, the world’s most powerful spotbeam satellite, turns a new page in affordable and immediately available IP solutions, and places Europe at the forefront of high-capacity satellite technologies that can serve to quickly close the broadband gap." said Eutelsat boss Michel de Rosen.

Eutelsat said that the KA-SAT is can offer businesses greater speeds of up to 40Mbps download and 10Mbps upload.
