Korean electronics giant Samsung is set to unveil a high resolution 10.1-inch display for tablets at the SID Display Week 2011.
The new 300dpi screen offers an astonishing 2560×1600 pixels, some four times greater than that of the Apple iPad and Android tablets such as the Motorola Xoom. Samsung also said the display will be visible in direct sunlight.
Samsung teamed up with technology development company Nouvoyance to design the display based on so-called PenTile technology which has individual elements for red, green, blue and white.
PenTile is based on a ‘quincunx’ arrangement of pixels which packs in more pixels with less gaps. The result is a display which uses 40 percent less power while providing twice the HD viewing performance compared to traditional RGB stripe LCDs, Samsung said.
Samsung expects to have commercial availability of this technology for tablet applications later this year. The announcement paves the way for an updated 10-inch Samsung Android tablet armed with the new iPad-beating display.
