Apple boosts iMac range with CPU and graphics horsepower

Apple announced a range of updated all-in-one iMacs with faster quad-core Intel processors, better AMD Radeon GPUs and the new high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology.

The new iMacs will also come equipped with a ‘FaceTime HD’ camera and will offer up to 70 per cent better processor performance and three times better graphics performance due to the new AMD Radeon HD 6700 and 6900-series graphics, Apple said.

"Our customers love the iMac’s aluminum enclosure, gorgeous display and all-in-one design," said Apple marketing boss Philip Schiller, claiming that the updated iMac amounted to the "world’s best desktop."

iMac options will include the choice of quad-core Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors up to 3.4GHz. The smaller screen 21.5-inch iMac will be equipped with a single Thunderbolt port while the larger 27-inch model will boast two of the next-generation Intel 10Gbps interconnect.

Prices start at 999 for the 21.5-inch 2.5GHz Core i5 model with 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive and AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics.

Higher-end models come with 1TB drives and Radeon 6770M graphics, including the 27-inch 2.7GHz Core i5 model which will set you back £1,399 on the Apple Store.

All iMacs come with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard OS and the iLife application suite.
