Already has 10,000 more free applications

Android to overtake iPhone apps in five months

Free applications on the Google Android Market have surpassed the number available on the Apple App Store according to a new Distimo report.

Mobile app analytics firm Distimo said that the Android OS was tops for free applications, clocking in over 134,000 while the iPhone had 122,000. Yet the number of paid Android applications was barely a third of that available on the App Store.

Distimo also forecast that the Android Market would be the largest store in total applications in five months time, based on current growth rates.

The report also highlighted the level of cross platform development with 58 per cent of the top 50 most popular mobile application publishers on iOS having already made applications for rival smartphone platforms.

iPad applications have, according to Distimo, become more expensive over time while on other application stores prices have been trending towards. The firm also pointed towards a decrease in applications supporting in-app purchases.

The firm also said that Windows Phone 7 marketplace would overtake that of the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World before Microsoft’s smartphone OS was even one year old.
