Sony announced that a hacker had obtained the user account information for millions of users of the firm’s PlayStation 3 console in a massive data breach.
With the PlayStation Network nearing six days of down time including the Easter break after it had been shut down last Friday, angry gamers vented their frustration on forums worldwide.
The firm’s woes didn’t end there, today Sony admitted that user information had been stolen in on the PlayStation web site, potentially revealing personal information of up to 70 million users worldwide.
""We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network."
Sony went on to state that out of an "abundance of caution" the company was advising customers that credit card information may also have been stolen.
"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility," they said.
The April 17th to 18th time frame predates the initial PlayStation Network trouble noticed by users, suggesting that even through the service disruptions, Sony was still unaware of the breach.
Sony issued security advice for customers, advising them to be vigilant against fraud attempts. With the intruder having obtained names, addresses, birth dates and email addresses and user login and password information, the ramifications for millions of customer’s security is substantial.
The firm suggested that any passwords shared on other services should also be changed.
Restoration of the PlayStation Network appears now not to be imminent with Sony saying that it expected service to be resumed "within a week."
