Wi-fi only 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet

Dell Streak 7 goes on sale for ?300

Dell has begun selling the new Dell Streak 7 Android wi-fi tablet for £299 via the firm’s online web store.

The 7-inch tablet is offered with the Android 2.2 operating system but Dell says the Streak 7 has ‘over-the-ear upgrade capability’ to future operating systems.

The Streak 7 is powered by Nvidia’s dual-core Tegra 2 chipset running at 1GHz and screen packs in 800 x 480 pixels, the same as the current crop of high-end Android smartphones.

The Streak 7 also has a 1.3MP front-facing camera, 16GB of Flash storage and Bluetooth 2.1 which will make the device suitable for tethering from a phone. A 3G + wi-fi version will appear later, Dell said.

The smaller 7-inch form factor and the smartphone-like screen resolution has effectively maximised the compatibility with the existing Android software library. By contrast the Motorola Xoom, the only Android 3.0 so far, has far fewer applications suitable for the larger sized screen.

Dell is also including a Dell-specific media front-end software solution the firm says "delivers the things that matter to you right to your desktop, with your most recent content always front and center."
