Google tips The Social Network for Oscar Best Picture

Google tipped The Social Networking as the winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards based on emerging search trends.

Posting on the Google blog, Niv Efron of Google’s Israeli R&D unit said as the nominees were announced four of the top ten rending search items in the US were Oscar-related.

"Each year, the winning film has shown an upward trend in search volume for at least four weeks, as well as highest regional interest from New York," said Efron.

If the pattern is consistent then The Social Network was most likely to take out Best Picture, followed by Black Swan and The King’s Speech.

"We can’t say for sure what will happen this year, since searches can only reflect what people are interested in, but it’s fun to look for patterns that persist year after year."

Google have created a website which allows film buffs to explore Oscar search trends worldwide as well as seeing what people are saying in real time.
