Korean electronics giant Samsung has lifted the lid on a larger sibling of the firm’s successful 7-inch Galaxy Tab, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to feature Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
Samsung called the tablet a "Smart Media Device" and in keeping with other Honeycomb tablets, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is also based on the dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset.
"The Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 is a valuable addition to our expanding portfolio of smart media devices," said Samsung sales and marketing boss DJ Lee.
"Sporting a large 10.1 screen and dual surround-sound speakers, [the Galaxy Tab 10.1] enables users to enjoy multimedia to the maximum extent without having to compromise mobility."
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a 1280 x 800 resolution display and will come in 16GB and 32GB internal storage models. The device is said to first appear on Vodafone contracts in ‘spring’ and Vodafone ‘terminals’ boss Patrick Chomet said that the Tab 10.1 would be the first Honeycomb tablet to appear in many markets.
Chomet’s comment is likely aimed at the Motorola Xoom which is expected to appear first in the US. It’s not clear which markets the Tab 10.1 will appear in first.
The Tab 10.1 has a forward facing 2 megapixel camera and a rear-facing 8 megapixel unit and is capable of recording 1080p video at 24 frames per second. Connectivity includes BlueTooth 2.1 and 802.11n Wi-Fi in addition to GSM GSPA+ mobile network standards.
Curiously Engadget claim the Tab 10.1 doesn’t feature a USB port which would be rather unusual to say the least. USB 2.0 is listed on Samsung’s own specifications.
The other notable feature is that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 weighs a gram under 600gr, noticably lighter than the 730gr of the Motorola Xoom and the current generation iPad. The Samsung unit does not, however, offer HDMI video out while the Xoom does.
