Survey shows BT as third place provider while O2 subsidiary takes second

Virgin Media confirmed UKs fastest broadband provider

If you want the fastest internet in town then you’ll have to go to Virgin.

A survey by Cable.co.uk revealed Virgin Media provides customers with an average download speed of 7.8Mbps – a full 4.4Mbps faster than the nearest competitor.

Be Broadband, a subsidiary of O2, came second providing customers with average speeds of 5.8Mbps. The next fastest providers were BT, Sky and Orange, respectively.

The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Virgin has a virtual monopoly on the UK’s existing fiber-optic cable network, which provides much faster speeds than the ADSL currently used by other providers.

Virgin can offer speeds of up to 50Mbps, but still provide ADSL to people living outside their high-speed network.

The British broadband landscape is ripe for change, however. This year BT is due to install fiber-optic lines for its new ‘Infinity’ service.

Last week, Virgin restructured a mid-level broadband package ahead of competition Infintiy. The UKs fastest provider upgraded their 20Mbps package to 30Mbps, at £18.50 per month.
