The sound of failing hard drives

Data recovery outfit Data Cent has published a range of sound samples which the firm says are typical sounds heard from failed and failing hard drives.

Data Cent said that the sounds were typical of those heard in the firm’s recovery labs and urged users to backup immediately if they hear sounds like those posted.

The list includes samples of Western Digital drives with ‘bad heads clunking’, Seagate drives with a ‘seized spindle trying to spin up, Maxtor drives making ‘clicking/knocking/beeping’ noises and an IDM desktop drive with ‘degraded media making scratching sounds’.

The list of hard drive sound samples can be found on Data Cent’s hard drive sounds page.
