Google Docs gets file handling update

Google unveiled an update to the internet giant’s cloud-based productivity suite Google Docs which aims to simplify working with files.

Google product manager Vijay Bangaru said that the firm will be rolling out a new version of Google Docs that will incorporate a new documents list which is designed to "make it more useful o find, explore and share all your files stored 100% on the web."

"This update will also improve the experience of exploring and browsing your files," wrote Bangaru on the Google Docs blog.

"We added a preview panel on the right side of the document list, so that you can see a preview thumbnail, sharing settings and more at a glance. And if the file is a video, you can start playing it directly from the preview panel or from the recently announced video player."

Bangaru also said that Collections would replace Folders in the left navigation bar with the new Collections designed to "combine the best features of labels and folders."

A file may now reside in multiple Collections and the Collections can exist in a hierarchy and may be shared with others, just the same as sharing documents.

"This refresh is rolling out now and should be available to everyone over the next couple days," Bangaru said.
