New processor IP aimed at next-gen 4G smartphones

ARM launches new Cortex-R5 and R7 CPUs

Mobile CPU designer ARM announced the launch of the ARM Cortex-R5 MPCore and the Cortex-R7 MPCore processors for use in 3G and 4G mobile devices.

Cambridge-based ARM said that the new processors allow the firm’s partners to ‘future-proof their designs based on a single consistent architecture’.

The Cortex-R5 and the Cortex-R7 may be implemented as single or dual-core processors while the Cortex-R7 features SMP multicore technology with new real-time enhancements which the firm said enables performance and energy efficiency to be optimised for the intended applications.

These two advanced processors bring together more than 20 years of ARM expertise in low-power design with a host of new high-performance and real-time technologies which enables our Partners to future-proof their designs based on a single consistent architecture," said ARM processor VP Eric Schorn.

ARM said that the Cortex-R7 "greatly extends the performance levels of the Cortex-R series beyond any existing capabilities."

The company announced immediate licensing for the processor cores which are expected to appear in a variety of mobile system-on-chip solutions in the future.
