Report claims move is part of Apple fight-back

Google seeks out mobile app developers

Google plans to boost efforts to develop applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The internet giant plans a recruitment drive for software developers according to sources quoted by the Journal. Existing Google employees had already changed job roles to reflect the new focus on mobile software development, they claimed.

A so-called "apps lab" department has sought to hire application developers while still allowing a high degree of autonomy in developing their mobile applications, Journal sources said.

The Journal speculated that the motivation behind boosted internal application development may be driven by the direct revenue potential such as in-app advertising and a boost to the overall number and quality of applications giving the Android platform a leg-up on arch rival Apple.
