AMD announced the launch of a Fusion APU aimed at the embedded market called the AMD Embedded G-Series.
Based on the ‘Bobcat’ x86 processor core, like the rest of the AMD range of APUs, the G-Series incorporates a DirectX 11-capable graphics part on the same piece of silicon. AMD said that the new class of processor combined more computing power on a single die than any processor "in the history of computing" and represented an opportunity for major advancements in embedded systems.
AMD said that a number of embedded systems would shortly arrive based on the G-Series from companies such as Advansus, Compulab and Fujitsu. Target product categories AMD cited as targets for the G-Series included nternet-ready set top boxes and small factor PCs.
"AMD’s commitment is to ensure the game-changing technologies we develop for consumers and the enterprise are also available for the vast and growing embedded market," said AMD server and embedded boss Patrick Patla.
"Today, we have a record number of embedded launch partners. They are using the unique advancements of the AMD Embedded G-Series APU to develop a brand new generation of highly differentiated, energy-efficient, small form-factor embedded systems that can deliver the vivid visual experience expected in our always-connected world."
The G-Series APUs are offered with single or dual x86 Bobcat CPU cores running at speeds up to 1.6GHz. Despite the hefty horsepower on tap, the processors are designed with just 9W and 18W TDP values.
