Market research outfit Intersperience said that almost one in six Christmas gifts ordered online did not arrive due to extreme weather conditions affecting delivery services across the UK.
The firm announced the results of a survey of over 1,000 consumers which revealed that continued economic uncertainty was the major reason that a quarter of those surveyed opted to spend around $245m less than the previous year.
The Intersperience survey found that the poor weather boosted internet sales with 35 per cent of shoppers spending more online than expected but an astonishing 68 per cent said that they had experienced a problem with their online purchases.
17 per cent of shoppers didn’t receive one of their presents by Christmas Day while 11 per cent received either the wrong item or had some other problem with what they received.
Intersperience boss Paul Hudson said: "The majority of those that went online looking for a bargain or to beat the snow had a problem of some kind. Overall, online retailing failed to live up to people’s expectations and the problems they faced receiving orders put them off further internet purchases."
