PC gaming peripheral specialist Razer has used the CES 2011 show to unveil a ‘PC Gaming Concept Design’ the firm has given the code name of the ‘Razer Switchblade’
The device is a touch-screen 7-inch notebook computer powered by an Intel Atom CPU which the firm says brings “traditional PC desktop gaming to a portable form factor.”
The company is aiming to replace the traditional keyboard and mouse interface with an ultra-sensitive multi-touch screen and a ‘dynamic tactile keyboard’ with an intelligent user interface that is able to adjust the key layout per game.
“The main problem with mobile PC gaming so far is that no one has been able to port the full mouse and keyboard experience onto a small size portable solution,” said Razer boss Min-Liang Tan.
"By combining adaptive on-the-fly controls and display, we managed to maintain the full tactile keyboard in a miniature computer while saving valuable screen estate."
The best way of describing the device would be something like a cross between a netbook with a configurable key-based gaming controller instead of a keyboard. The device as demonstrated is just 172 x 115 x 25mm inside but the company has no plans to make it available for sale.
Instead Razer is calling the Windows 7-powered Switchblade a concept design, urging that it be considered like a ‘concept car’. The company said it will be working with ‘selected partners to design and launch products based off the Razer Switchblade.’
