Canon intros ultra compact XA10 professional camcorder

Canon has announced the ultra compact XA10 Professional Camcorder which packs 1080p video recording and professional features and a 1/3rd-inch CCD into an 820gr package.

Canon said that the XA10 is the “ultimate professional camcorder for run-and-gun shooting”, citing a detachable handle for low-angle shooting and portability as well as handle mounted XLR audio inputs and external microphone clamp.

The camera is also capable of shooting in the dark via infrared video capture capabilities which the firm said was useful for law enforcement and wildlife videographers. The XA10 has 64GB of storage built-in as well as two SDXC-compatible card slots. The device is also capable of recording to two cards at the same time for backup purposes.

“We are making a statement that Canon will have the professional HD video solution for your needs, whether you are shooting in a studio, on the street, on set, or out in the wilderness. The new, compact XA10 camcorder is yet another tool for professionals who are shooting HD video on-the-fly.”

The Canon XA10 Professional Camcorder has a 10x HD Zoom lens and sports the Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor and a Canon 1/3-inch native 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor. The XA10 is compatible with Canon’s new WM-V1 Wireless Microphone for audio recording from up to 50 meters away.

The XA10 will be available in March for around $2,000 while the WM-V1 Bluetooth microphone will arrive in May for around $250.
