Intel has revealed that the chipmaker’s next generation Sandy Bridge processors have an anti-theft remote shutdown feature.
Speaking to itbusiness.ca, Intel’s North American distribution sales boss said David Allen said that users could set up systems using the new processors so that they could be shut down remotely in the event of being lost or stolen.
Allen was discussing the needs of enterprise in particular where the ability to implement a remote ‘kill switch’ will be particularly attractive for enterprise and government companies worried about the potential damage of misplaced or stolen laptops.
“As we go forward into 2011, Sandy Bridge will deliver the security, connectivity and performance options that businesses need and we’ll rely on our channel to help deliver this to the SMB market,” Allen told itbusiness.ca.
Reportedly the new range of Sandy Bridge processors will also contain features to enable better recovery and patching of computer systems although this wasn’t elaborated on.
Intel will formerly launch the Sandy Bridge range at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
