VIDEO: 2010 review - how the world searched

Google opens Zeitgeist 2010

Google has launched the firm’s inaugural Zeitgeist web portal which shows a window into the issues that dominated the consciousness of Internet users the world over the past year.

Google called 2010 a “year of struggles”, citing the European debt crisis, US unemployment and the political crisis in Thailand as the themes which dominated “how the world searched” according to the world’s most popular search engine.

The firm also called 2010 a “year of achievements”, calling out the synthetic DNA genome, the world’s first face transplant, the Large Hadron Collider coming online and the International Space Station as achievements which had inspired web searches this year.

Tragedies were of course another unfortunate feature of the past year with the gulf oil spill, floods in Pakistan and, earthquakes in China and Haiti appearing prominently on the Zeitgeist 2010 timeline.

In terms of the IT industry, Google’s Zeitgeist 2010 shows that the fastest growing search terms of 2010 were perhaps unsurprisingly mobile device dominated with the iPad, iPhone 4, Nokia 5530, HTC Evo 4G and Nokia N900 topping the list.
