Andy Rubin refuses claims that Android has "hit a plateau"

300,000 Android smartphones activated every day

Google’s head of the firm’s smartphone and soon-to-be tablet OS Android has said that the firm is now activating 300,000 new Android handsets a day.

Rubin tweeted the statement following a report by Apple fan site AppleInsider which claimed that Android handset activations had "hit a plateau below Apple’s iOS."

The daily activation figures don’t include a number of non-smartphone devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab which the Korean manufacturer said had sold over a million units.

Last month Gartner announced that Android had become the world’s second most popular smartphone operating system behind Nokia’s Symbian but leading Apple iOS devices and BlackBerry OS in third and fourth places respectively.

Microsoft has so date refused to discuss sales figures for the firm’s mobile OS reboot, Windows Phone 7. Meanwhile Google is set to soon launch a second generation ‘Google phone’, the Nexus S based on the new Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’.
