Newcastle Metrocentre is also in top 10 busiest centres for Christmas shopping

London Westfield to be ‘most congested’ this weekend

London’s Westfield Centre is set to be the most congested shopping spot in Europe this Sunday, according to research by TomTom.

The GPS firm’s traffic analysis also found that many shoppers are likely to make Christmas purchases earlier than expected this year – with the first Saturday of the month being the busiest in 80 per cent of countries surveyed.

Apart from Westfield, all top five positions for the most congested shopping centres in December were Belgian.

Newcastle’s Metrocentre came in 10th and The Centre MK (Milton Keynes) came 12th, while Bluewater in Kent came 18th and Liverpool One was 22nd.

Ralf-Peter Schaefer, traffic director at TomTom, said: “Adverse weather conditions mixed with lots of extra Christmas shoppers is a recipe for traffic chaos on the roads. Our advice to shoppers is to check the live traffic situation on their route before they set out.”
