Microsoft Windows 1.0 appeared November 20th 1985

Microsoft Windows turns 25

This Saturday will mark with the 25th anniversary of the release of Windows 1.0 on the 20th of November 1985.

Enthusiasm for the operating system has waxed and waned over the years but it’s probably fairly safe to say that the early incarnations are not looked back on quite as fondly as Microsoft might have liked.

Benj Edwards of Vintagecomputing.com has authored two seperate slide shows chronicling the history of Microsoft’s now-ubiquitous operating system which are well worth a look for a walk down memory lane.

1. PC World’s Windows through the Ages

2. Technologizers’ Windows Oddities: 25 years of Microsoftian Weirdness

Edwards said "I’m not sure anyone is a "fan" of Windows. Most of us just use it because it’s there and it works" which may sell later versions of the OS short a little of their worth.

After 25 years, Microsoft must have been getting something right.
