UK government to create cyber warfare division

The Ministry of Defence is reported to be developing an offensive cyber warfare unit to complement its traditional military assets.

According to Politics.co.uk, although the MOD has not publicly acknowledged such a move, the armed forces minister Nick Harvey hinted at such a development in a speech to the think-tank Charter House. He stated that the new UK Defence Cyber Operations Group would be responsible for “developing, testing and validating cyber techniques as a complement to traditional military capabilities.”

“Actions in cyberspace form part of the battlefield rather than being separate to it,” continued Harvey. “We still live in a physical world – so physical capabilities will never be replaced, but they should be supplemented by cyber capabilities which will give protection where necessary and greater flexibility where required.”
