VIDEO: Eccentric trailer puts the focus on augmented reality

ARM introduces ‘unequalled’ Mali mobile GPU

ARM has introduced a new GPU design called the Mali-T604, which the company says can deliver up to five times the performance of its previous Mali GPU.

As with other ARM products, such as the Cortex range of CPUs which power virtually every smartphone on the market, the ARM Mali GPU is offered as a licence so that chipmakers can place it onto a single chip solution expected to also carry an ARM CPU core.

The firm said that Samsung would be the first partner with access to the new Mali GPU.

“Visual computing is driving the next generation of consumer electronics, as consumers and developers demand the highest levels of graphics performance,” said ARM media processor division boss Lance Howarth, adding that the GPU would deliver “unequalled user experiences in energy-efficient consumer electronic devices.”

ARM said that the new core technology offered to reduce memory bandwidth usage by up to 30 per cent, which in turn delivered benefits in power efficiency.

Breaking with the traditional tech-heavy video productions, ARM has produced a rather eccentricly abstract ‘trailer’ for the new Mali GPU which seems to place the focus on augmented reality applications.
