Legendary first person shooter gaming pioneer John Carmack revealed the first title to arrive on the iPhone featuring the RAGE game engine that stunned observers when it was first revealed at QuakeCon in August.
‘Mutant Bash TV’ is the RAGE spin-off that is set to arrive first on iPhone/iPad and iPod touch devices to introduce gamers to the RAGE gaming world and background story as well as being the first game to introduce id’s impressive 60 frames per second iOS RAGE engine.
“The little slice of RAGE that we decided to build the iPhone product around is “Mutant Bash TV”, a post apocalyptic combat game show in the RAGE wasteland,” wrote Carmack on the Bethesda blog.
“This is the perfect setup for a quintessential first person shooter game play experience — you pick your targets, aim your shots, time your reloads, dodge the bad guys, and try and make it through to the end of the level with a better score than last time.”
Carmack said that the game would offer arcade style elements such as pickups and scoring streak multipliers as well as familiar FPS concepts like headshots. Carmack also said that Mutant Bash TV would offer a range of game difficulty levels which would cater for gamers between “keep-hitting-fire-and-you-should-make-it” and “almost impossible.”
Carmack said that replayability was a design goal of the new iPhone game and that the developer aimed to achieve this through making gameplay rewarding rather than story progression, a familiar game design concept to fans of previous id software shooters.
“RAGE iOS is all action, all the time. I have played the game dozens of times, and testing it is still fun instead of a chore,” said Carmack.
