Valve are set to launch a free campaign DLC for the Left for Dead games but Xbox 360 gamers will need to pay.
The Sacrefice will be available for Left 4 Dead and the sequel Left 4 Dead 2, responding to criticism from PC gamers that Left 4 Dead 2 representated a new direction of charging for incremental content Valve had formerly released for free.
Valve also announced that Left 4 Dead 2 will arrive for the Mac tomorrow and this too will receive the same free updates including The Sacrefice. However The Sacrefice DLC will cost Xbox 360 gamers 560 points. Valve have had an antagonistic relationship with consoles versus their mainstay PC gaming business.
Valve boss Gabe Newell had initially called the PlayStation 3 "a waste of everybody’s time" but recently warmed to Sony console, calling it "the most open console" at E3 in June and announcing Portal 2 would arrive on the platform.
The comment was aimed at the fact that Microsoft places restrictions on adding free updates to games, which will be of scant comfort to Xbox 360 owners who have received a small fraction of the updates for another Valve mulitplayer title Team Fortress 2.
Valve said that with The Sacrifice for Left 4 Dead owners, gamers receive the complete The Sacrifice campaign with maps playable in Campaign, Versus, and Survival. There is a new style finale and "plenty of places for devastating Hunter pounces."
For Left 4 Dead 2 owners, gamers receive The Sacrifice campaign and L4D1’s “No Mercy” both playable with the L4D1 Survivors. Each campaign is playable in Campaign, Versus, Survival, and Scavenge modes and both feature the Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected, items, and weapons.
