Advertising trade body accuses venture of being a ?quasi-monopoly?

Advertisers attack YouView

The trade organisation for advertisers, ISBA, has joined the growing number of companies that are asking Ofcom to investigate the BBC-led YouView IPTV venture.

According to ERT Online, ISBA is concerned that the venture, formally known as Project Canvas, is a quasi-monopoly and that the BBC Trust is the only industry body to have oversight of the project.

The BBC Trust is a regulator for a publicly-funded, tax-backed business,” said the ISBA’s director of media and advertising, Bob Wootton. “Why has that been the sole point of regulation for something that is both hybrid and commercial?”

The ISBA joins Virgin Media, Six TV, IP Vision and United for Local Television in calling for an Ofcom investigation. The industry regulator is expected to make a ruling on YouView next month.
