Sony have taken the wraps off the SMP-N100 network media player while will go up against the newly relaunched Apple TV.
The SMP-N100 offers Sony’s Bravia Internet video service which provides access to a number of content offerings such as youTube, Demand Five, BBC iPlayer and Lovefilm. Like the Apple TV it comes equipped with Wi-Fi but unlike Apple TV, Sony’s SMP-N100 is fully 1080p capable.
There’s also a feature to allow controlling the SMP-N100 with an iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone via a free Sony application.
The SMP-N100 is set to cost around £120, £30 more than its arch rival, however it also offers full DNLA client capability to talk to other compatible devices on the user’s home network, an external USB port for accessing local media and it’s also capable of playing a wider range of video formats including Xvid, DivX and H264 video in MKV containers.
The SMP-N100 is due out some time some time in October.
