Cash-strapped video rental firm looks to diversify

Blockbuster to sell TVs and phones

Blockbuster is to start selling mobile phones, iPods and TVs alongside its traditional offerings of video and DVD rental.

According to Retail Week, the announcement follows new that the retailers US division filed for bankruptcy last week although apparently the UK division will remain unaffected.

Blockbuster has been trialling TV sales in ten stores across the country, with plans in place to expand this number to 25, and is currently in negotiations with mobile phone vendors to sell phones from 2011.

“We believe that mobile phones will have a much bigger role in the entertainment world,” commented Blockbuster’s UK commercial director Gerry Butler. “We already have a successful relationship with T-Mobile, offering Blockbuster rewards for their consumer base.”
