Facebook movie gains widespread praise

The Social Network, a movie that chronicles the development of Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, has been highly acclaimed by film critics.

Written by legendary US TV scriptwriter Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network has been adapted from the 2009 Ben Mezrich novel Accidental Billions and directed by Academic Award Best Director nomated David Fincher (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). The film is due for theatrical release on the 1st of October but a number of glowing reviews from film critics have appeared in recent days.

The film has gained an almost unhead of 100 per cent Metacritic rating for six reviews and also 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes for 14 critic reviews. Rolling Stone said the film was "better than the movie of the year", the New York Post called it "possibly the first truly great fact-based movie of the 21st century" and the Hollywood Reporter called it a "must-see."

Telling the story of the brilliant 26-year-old Zuckerberg that created Facebook in the dorms of Harvard University, the film is larged based on previously unknown actors in an ensemble cast. The film also depicts legal conflicts as claims emerge from fellow students who attempt to gain a peice of the explosively successful social networking giant that created the world’s youngest billionaire.

The film is also far from flattering of Zuckerberg, portraying him as a ruthless self-absorbed ficture that puts success ahead of friends and relationships.

Zuckerberg has previously said that he doesn’t intend to see the film, descripting it as a work of "fiction". However appearing on US cult talk show Oprah, Zuckerberg said: "It’s a movie, it’s fun… I can promise you, this is my life so I know it’s not that dramatic."

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg has announced a new Start-Up Education Foundation, which is initially funding public schools in Newark, New Jersey, to the tune of $100 million. The timing of the announcement came on the same day as the premiere of The Social Network which critics seized upon as a PR stunt.
