Social network devices will probably land in Europe first, sources claim

Facebook ‘to launch smartphones next year’

Facebook is working with mobile phone manufacturer INQ Mobile on two smartphones that could hit the UK early next year, reports suggest.

According to Bloomberg, a source said the as yet unnamed devices are due to be launched in Europe in the first half of 2011 and the US in the second half. They will probably run on Google’s Android operating system.

Another source claims network operator AT&T is considering carrying the handsets in the US, but no deal has been made.

Facebook declined to comment on specific plans, but said it is still working with companies including INQ Mobile, which has previously made phones with an integrated Facebook feature.

One of the new smartphones is expected to feature a qwerty keyboard and a touchscreen, while the other would be touch only, similar to the iPhone in appearance.

While Facebook will provide many of the devices’ features, other social tools will be offered, sources said.
