Encourages internal development of future tablet software

HP webOS app competition nets 500 entries

HP CTO Phil McKinney tweeted that he had received over 500 entries into an internal competition to develop new webOS applications.

The applications are being developed by HP’s internal software development teams for an internal event called TechCon. McKinney tweeted that his mailbox had "exploded" with entries, with around 500 entered in the competition in which smartphones were offered as prizes.

"We are in the final stage of selecting ‘best app’ winners. Stay tuned…" tweeted McKinney in a Twitter conversation with webOS fan site precentral.net. HP is set to launch a webOS-powered tablet in Q1 2011.

While the number may be low compared to rival app catalogs such as the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace, HP will be using the competition to bolster the launch catalog available at launch. The company is also hoping to entice new application developers to webOS.
