US analysts The Information Network have released a report which found that hard drive shipments dropped 4 per cent in the second quarter.
While shipments are up 23 per cent over 2009, the company said that the findings could be indicative of a drop in the number of PC system sales in the second and third quarters. Overall the company forecast hard drive sales to be up 22 per cent for 2010 over the previous year, amounting to 680 million units.
"Looking further down the supply chain, hard drive shipments in the second quarter of 2010 were down 4% sequentially but up 23% from the second quarter of 2009. There were several factors in the drop: weakness in Europe, destocking by PC customers, and a shift in ordering patterns by PC vendors as they took advantage of lower cost sea versus air freight," said Information Network vice president Robert Castellano.
