"Facebook Stories" marketing push expected

Facebook nears 500 million users

Social networking phenomenon Facebook is expected to reach a milestone of half a billion users this week, according to Facebook marketing head Randi Zuckerberg.

The site is expected to accompany the announcement by unveiling a celebratory marketing activity called "Facebook Stories" according to Silicon Valley watcher Boomtown

The milestone comes after a phenomenal growth over the last seven years. The company had earlier become embroiled in a controversy surrounding privacy controls which CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained by saying: "A big part of the challenge that we’ve had is that we’ve grown from tens of thousands of users to hundreds of millions."

"It’s been a big shift along the way, and it hasn’t always been smooth," he added.

Regarding the upcoming activities, sister of CEO Mark, Randi Zuckerberg told Boomtown: "In the past, it’s been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realized we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users."

The site is expected to host a special site which contains a number of stories from users from their lives as they relate to participating in the iconic social networking site.

Facebook is still taking submissions for the new site, limited to 420 characters, on the User Stories web page
